JCU's Learning Centre first symposium in Singapore

JCU’s Learning Centre department is hosting its first ever symposium in Singapore.

In order to further the discussion about learning support as an integral part of higher education institutions, the Learning Centre of James Cook University (JCU) in Singapore will host a symposium on 1 November 2019 at C2-14 lecture hall, from 9:00AM to 1:00PM.

The symposium will gather professionals in the field of learning support (or its related fields) and engage them in understanding its roles in higher education institutions.

How learning support is viewed in higher education systems in Singapore is a key question that will drive the discussion among the experts present at the symposium.

The overarching theme of the symposium is “Challenges in providing learning support to students in higher education institutions in Singapore”. Three sub-themes will be covered:

  1. The theoretical and practical underpinnings of learning support
  2. The thin line between providing generic and specialist support to students
  3. The role of educational technology in learning support

Each sub-theme will be presented by a panel of experts. The presentations will be comprised of brief speeches followed by panel discussions.

Dr Nimrod Delante, learning advisor of the Learning Centre at JCU in Singapore, shares, “The symposium will be an opportunity for higher education institutions to discuss the learning support challenges that they face, to ask the right questions, and to share their best practices.”

“This will help enhance the position and strengthen the role and relevance of learning support in higher education institutions in Singapore. This will also be a small step towards creating awareness about the importance of learning support, and in amplifying its voice in higher education institutions.”

Ultimately, this symposium will be instrumental for James Cook University in Singapore to encourage future collaborations and facilitate a possible creation of a network of learning support in higher education institutions in Singapore.

This will pave the way in establishing the Singapore campus of JCU that is dedicated to providing quality education to students and contributing to their success and development.
